Frequently asked questions
Straight answers to the most common questions about Pistol Foundations.
Yes, Pistol Foundations is designed for beginners, including people who have never fired a handgun before. No prior formal firearms training is required.
We start with firearm safety, handgun controls, loading and unloading, grip, shooting position, sights, and trigger control before moving into live fire. The class is intentionally limited to six students so you have time to ask questions, practice each skill, and receive individual coaching.
You do not need to arrive already knowing what you’re doing. That’s what the class is for.
Yes. Pistol Foundations can be a good fit even if you already have some handgun experience but want a stronger, more consistent foundation.
Many people have been shooting with friends or family, learned informally, or simply haven’t had professional coaching on the fundamentals. The class focuses on understanding why the fundamentals work and developing safe, repeatable skills rather than simply becoming familiar with a handgun.
If you can shoot but still find yourself wondering whether you’re doing it correctly, this class was built for that gap.
Yes. Pistol Foundations is specifically designed to make learning to shoot a handgun more understandable and less intimidating.
We begin away from live fire with safety, handgun operation, and dry practice so you have time to understand what you’re doing before adding the noise and activity of the range. Once live fire begins, you’ll apply those same skills with coaching and feedback.
You will not be expected to know range terminology, commands, or “how things are done” before you arrive.
No. You do not necessarily need to own a handgun before taking Pistol Foundations. If you already own one, we generally prefer that you learn with the handgun you intend to use so you become more comfortable operating it.
If you do not own a handgun yet, a range rental may be an option when available. If a rental is not available, Idaho Gun School can help you determine an appropriate option before class.
In fact, getting professional instruction before purchasing your first handgun can help you make a more informed decision about what works for you.
Plan on approximately 50 rounds of ammunition for Pistol Foundations.
The course is not built around firing a large number of rounds. Live fire is used to apply the fundamentals you practiced earlier in class, receive feedback, make adjustments, and repeat the process.
Your class information will include any additional ammunition or equipment details you need before arriving.
Bring your handgun if you own one, approximately 50 rounds of the correct ammunition, and the personal items listed in your class instructions.
Because Pistol Foundations includes classroom instruction, dry practice, and live-fire training, you’ll receive specific information about the class location, range requirements, safety equipment, and anything else you need before class.
If you are unsure whether your handgun, ammunition, or other equipment is appropriate, contact Idaho Gun School before purchasing something specifically for the course.
No. Pistol Foundations is a handgun fundamentals course, not a concealed carry course.
The class focuses on safe handgun handling, firearm operation, loading and unloading, grip, shooting position, sights, trigger control, recoil management, range skills, and repeatable practice.
It does not focus on concealed carry tactics, holster work, defensive scenarios, movement, or advanced shooting techniques. If concealed carry is your eventual goal, building solid handgun fundamentals first gives you a stronger foundation for more advanced training.
You don't have to arrive already knowing what you're doing.
You just have to be willing to learn.
